ANCIENT FORT, AKHNOOR
Built on the earlier terraces of Harappan period on the bank of the Chandrabagha River, the construction of the fort was started by Raja Tej Singh on the pattern of Mughal forts and was completed by Raja Alam Singh in the beginning of the 19th century. It was repaired by Raja Gulab Singh after his coronation in 1822 A.D.
The lofty fortification walls are crowned with battlements and have bastions of various dimensions. At the corners, there are two-storeyed watchtowers surrounded by battlements. The fort is accessed through two entrances, one on the river side and the other on the northern side.
The fort consists of two parts bifurcated by a wall, with a passage leading to the palace towards the river side. The palace on the southern side is a two-storeyed building, and the walls of its courtyard have mural paintings.
Remains of ancient structures, a settlement representing the Harappan period, graffiti, and various objects have also been found here.
